Pres. Bush should ask oil companies and OPEC to reduce prices

This probably wont happen but I thought I would throw this out there. I think Pres. Bush should ask OPEC to reduce the price of a barrel of oil during this time of disaster for the United States. US oil companies should freeze oil prices for a little while. Further increase in gas prices could hurt the economy. I think most people drive not because they want to but because they have to. While its true that gas prices are higher in Europe, they have a much more expansive transit system so they are generally not effected by the gas prices. They also have more taxes added to their price and they have more people per square mile than we do.

I'm not sure I agree. If the prices are frozen, then consumers wont curb their consumption. My idea (about as likely as yours) is to place a temporary $1 per gallon federal tax on personal use (not business use such as construction) gasoline in cities with decent transit. The Twin Cities metro is a good example. Use the money (it wouldn't be enough, but it would help) to subsidize the cost of the transit and temporarily reduce fares by half. That would be a great incentive to use transit, easing the demand on the fuel supplies and keeping the price spike from going out of control until the situation normalizes. Once that happens, the tax and reduced transit fares can be repealed.
