Racial profiling-good or bad

This has been a hot topic for quite a while and expecially after 9/11. I think that while race should be a factor it should not be the sole factor in profiling. Minorities often have the most complaints against police officers. Personally I think that minorities are racially profiled by metro area police officers. Im not sure why this is. I have not had problems with police officers outside the metro area. For full disclosure my brother-in-law is a police officer. I also think that if metro police officers tracked based on behavior rather than on race they would be more successful and have the respect of the minority communities.

While that may be true recent studies indicate that a minority is more likely to be arrested onced stopped than a white person. Of course each situation is unique. However I have heard complaints from asians being pulled over by police not just blacks since living in the metro area. My experience working at the state capitol assisting capitol security that often race has little to do with raising suspicions. More often its peoples behavior that usually warrants further action by security. Im not sure how applicable this is to the street cop.

From what I understand, racial profiling is inneffective on top of innappropriate. Kaczynski and McVeigh were white domestic terrorists. Jose Padilla, the shoe bomber, is an hispanic american. Further, the Muslim Chechnyan rebels have used Eastern European women as suicide bombers. These people do not fit a racial or even gender profile.
